Rather than simply listing its advantages, we would like to share the perspective of one student, Miss C.Miss C, originally from Taiwan and now residing in the U.S. for several years, completed her first master's degree in California. While she successfully secured a job in Los Angeles, luck wasn't always on her side. Despite her hard work and efforts, she didn't win the H1B lottery after two years of attempting. To maintain her legal status in the U.S., Miss C embarked on a search for a suitable day 1 CPT university, where she could further her academic profile while retaining the ability to work. Day 1 CPT Policy at Harrisburg University:

In order to complete the MS degree program's requirement of integrating professional work experience into all phases, F1 visa holders studying abroad must apply for and be granted approval for CPT, or Curricular Practical Training. The federal government defines CPT as an alternate form of work-study, internship, cooperative education position, or other internship or practicum that is a required component of a recognized curriculum. Since each of Harrisburg University's Master of Science degree programs assumes professional work experience as a necessary component, nonimmigrant students holding a valid F1 visa and otherwise maintaining status may be permitted to accept internships and work placements through CPT in order to position themselves for the same academic success that their counterparts who are not subject to regulations enjoy in the classroom.

An F1 student cannot accept and start an alternative work study program until they have received permission from one of HU's Designated School Officials (DSO). Students should get in touch with the International Student Office (ISO) for more details on when and how to apply. We advise students to be aware of this: Regulations under SEVP pertain to job and training opportunities that take place off campus. Revocation of the I-20 and risk to F1 standing will arise from failure to maintain status. Without endangering their F1 designation, HU's DSOs can direct students to options that will assist them achieve their goals.

A student's CPT internship or job might be full-time (21 hours or more per week) or part-time (20 hours or fewer per week), provided it is related to their course of study. If a student is pre-registered for the upcoming semester of attendance, HU permits the term of qualifying CPT employment to be prolonged during the brief intervals between semesters. HU restricts CPT work to no more than 40 hours a week and demands that academics take precedence. CPT might not continue during breaks of a semester.
